Mid-winter malaise and marathon DVD watching (season one of HBO's The Wire = good not great) has prevented me from posting on a more regular basis. I'll try to mark February with more news and photos here. January was a busy month for us... lots of trip-planning (my trip to Oregon, Sam's trips around the world), plumbing emergencies, and big purchases... distractions abound. The weather, too, has been tumultuous and unpredictable. Last Sunday it reached 60 degrees, and we had the windows open all afternoon! Yesterday it blew like a fiend and poured, today is breezy and bright blue, and they're calling for a small showering of snow before the end of the weekend. The climate lends itself to a kind of aimless mania - looking out the window at any given moment, I am hard-pressed to identify the time of day. It is perpetually twilight, perhaps dawnish, always illuminated by an invisible sun. But on the not-quite-bright side, Scotland throws the most amazing shadows I've ever seen.
To catch up... we bought a car (our first, freebie car having died and been scrapped). We got an incredible deal on a 1999 Audi A4 4-door sedan with low miles and decent gas milage. The new found freedom was just what the doctor ordered, and we've been taking weekend day trips around the country side (i.e. Castle Fraser below). Sam bought his first suit for a posh University event in Edinburgh and is feeling quite the grown up. He looked magnificent, and as soon as he dons the black Hugo Boss get up again, I'll snap a pic when he's not looking and post it here. We also found out this month that our benevolent landlord is replacing the living room furniture, recarpeting, and buying new window dressings - hooray! We'll have a sharp-looking flat for all of our visitors to enjoy (ahem).
